Local primary school pupils bring creativity to the Town Centre

Inspiring the next generation of Wigan

At Fettlers, it’s not just about what we’re building – it’s about who we’re building it for. That’s why we were delighted to visit St Andrews Primary School, spending time with Year 5 and 6 pupils to talk about the Fettlers development and what it means for the town they call home.

The pupils didn’t just sit and listen, they got properly stuck in. There were great questions, thoughtful conversations about the town centre, and plenty of enthusiasm as we talked about how the area has changed over time and what’s coming next.

Then it was time to get creative, and the children absolutely rose to the challenge.

Inspired by Fettlers, the pupils produced a fantastic range of artwork filled with colour, imagination and unmistakable local pride. Each piece reflects their own take on the development, the town centre and its future, offering a fresh and thoughtful perspective from the next generation.

Year 5 teacher Michael Hoban said: 

“It was great having the Fettlers team in school and getting the children excited about the future of the town centre. The session linked perfectly with our Wigan history curriculum – the pupils learned about the town centre and the market, and getting to fettle something creative of their own for the project was a brilliant experience for them.”

Even better, the artwork hasn’t stayed in the classroom. The children’s designs are now up on the hoardings around the Fettlers site, adding colour and character to the area and giving passers-by something special to stop and look at. Seeing their work displayed in the town centre is a proud moment for the pupils – and a great reminder that Fettlers is rooted firmly in its community.

Next time you’re walking past the site, take a moment to check out the hoardings. You might just spot a future artist, designer, or town-shaper making their mark already.
